Back to School: Tips for Moving Into Your New Dorm
For many students, summer leads into the fall which heralds the beginning of the school year. If this is your first rodeo, the thought of moving out on your own is probably scary. Luckily we’re here to help offer you guidance. Check out our tips for moving into your new dorm smoothly and efficiently.
One of the first things you should do is plan for the day of your move. It’ll be wise to start early and seek out packing supplies the summer before you move out. Get labels, boxes, and Sharpies early on, so you don’t have to make any runs to the store at the last minute. Go to campus and get the lay of the land before move-in day so you aren’t running around in circles trying to find your dorm when the big day comes. Start your move weeks in advance, not the day of, and you’ll find that the entire process is smoother and less hurried. Make sure you write out everything you plan to do and execute!
You should make a checklist of everything you might need for your upcoming move day. What type of supplies will you need to purchase? Do you require anyone’s help? If there are moving people involved, then you might want to add anything you’re going to do with them to the list as well. Make sure you have dates and times when you want things to be accomplished as well to keep yourself on track.
The more detailed your list, the clearer things will be on move-day. This principle is largely an extension of planning ahead. Make sure you have every event written down that day, and have a list of all the things you’ll need to move. It’ll be a force multiplier on moving day.
Most colleges give you access to your prospective roommate’s phone number before you move in. Use this to your advantage. The first thing you should ask them is what they’re bringing. For instance, if you have a trash can they don’t need to bring theirs as well.
This will help you avoid doubling up on items. While you have them on the phone, ask them what household items they want to split, including groceries, and other essentials. One of you should also designate yourselves as the primary contact if something happens. Give this responsibility to the most responsible person, since that person will be contacted for emergencies most often.
We know that the first day you move will be hectic no matter how you cut it. You’ll likely be exhausted after a day of meeting new people and moving your things. Because of that, it might be wise to consider taking some time to yourself to wind down at the end of the day and call an old friend. The people who are most familiar with us will likely bring us comfort when we need it most, and after a long day, you can’t beat spending time with an old friend. Carve out some time for your loved ones, whether on the phone or in person. You’ll be happy you took that step for your mental health.
