Space Saving Tips for the New Year - Big Guy Storage
It is the New Year, and you may want to know what you will do about resolutions. Besides losing weight, one of people’s most popular resolutions is deep cleaning and maintaining their home. Part of that is decluttering and organizing it. However, we know it is easier said than done. After the New Year, we tend to slack off on our resolutions, but it does not have to be that way. Check out our tips on saving space in your home for the New Year. Read on below for more.
The first thing you want to do is declutter. You can divide your valuables into “active” and “passive” sections. These zones comprise things you actively use, and passive items are those you only use infrequently. An example of an active item is home exercise equipment. Passive items are things like holiday decorations that you use on a specific holiday. Passive items are items you need but not right away.
After you have delineated the two types of items in your home, it is time to put the active items back and shift through the passive items to determine what you won’t need for a while and which ones you will need soon.
If you have St. Patrick’s Day decorations, will you need them in the dead of winter? Put those items in boxes and stack them horizontally. You can put them in the basement or attic if you want, but storage units, such as the ones at Big Guy Storage, are a much better choice since they free up space while allowing you to keep your valuables.
Use your tech. We live in the 21st century, so holding onto old stacks of papers and files is no longer necessary. Scan them using an app like Evernote or Obsidian. If you are worried about taking notes on the files, you can annotate them in most modern note-taking apps. You do not need your home office space to look like a paper hurricane hit it. Instead, go through the files one by one. You can put what is left in a storage unit. We do not recommend shredding since you might need paperwork years from now.
Your home should be cleaner by now. However, how will you maintain it so you do not end up in the same place next year? Make a maintenance plan and smart goals. Assess what needs to be cleaned and organized and create a rotating schedule for each room in your home. This might look like committing to cleaning every Sunday and deep cleaning once a month. You can do this, making your home feel more spacious.
Self storage is perfect for storing your passive items and old documents. Luckily, we have a ton of options here at Big Guy Storage. With easy online renting, you can declutter for the new year in no time. Find what you need today.
